Initial discussion and notes.

There seems to be three types of music videos;
1) Narrative.
2) Performance.
3) Abstract.

Generally, I prefer videos that are quite abstract, whether it is due to animation, odd things occurring, or interesting ideas. I tend to remember music videos that are humorous or have a narrative.
After some discussion within my group, we found quite quickly that we have different musical tastes. However, there were some similarities in what attracted us to music videos, regardless of preferences to the music itself. As a group we realised that videos which tended to be quite abstract with some kind of narrative appealed most to us.
Given this some thought, an abstract video may be quite difficult to film, however it isn't impossible with the editing facilities at our disposal, and the abstract elements of our video do not necessarily have to be major.

I watched a few official music videos and took notes on them, attempting to distinguish what 'type' of music video they could be categorized into.

Pendulum - Witchcraft;
Through out the video, the band appears to perform to the song, however, there are no shots of them performing live. There is a narrative within this video, though the narrative itself is quite loose and seems to have very little relation to the song on first viewing. There are plenty of abstract parts to this video; purple water, a purple material is given life and wraps around a female, pulling her deeper into the water, rubble on the ground assumes its original shape. Arguably, there is religious imagery, lights create a star (possibly the star of David). From the quality of the video, it's fair to suggest that it was filmed in High Definition. Editing was used majorly in the production of this video. This is more of an abstract video than anything else.

Queens of the Stone Age - Monsters in the Parasol;
There is no actual performance from the band in this video, instead, a few members appear in the video as though they are ordinary people - relying on existing fanbase to recognise them. There is a narrative; a male dressed as a female, collecting money from people, this gives the impression 'she' is connected to the shady business (Possibly drugs, linking the video to the lyrics 'Paul's sister is an alien'). This video has no major abstract elements (just odd signs - a man dressed as a woman), though the lyrics of the actual song are abstract. The shots in this video are longer than usual, a dolly shot follows this actor through out, sometimes the average duration of a shot changes. There is no overt editing in this video, and sometimes, the impression is given that the camera is a simple one, as the quality isn't as good. In terms of the sort of video this is, it mixes two of the three types, giving more for the viewer to go on.

Kings of Leon - On Call;
This video includes no narrative, instead it features a performance through out. The editing is quite simple, going from a white background, to actual scenery (which could have easily been filmed in an actual location). This video includes many close ups of the lead singer, emphasising his role. Long shots are included of th entire band and there are no majorly abstract events. More than anything else, this video is largely based on the band performing to the song.
